Cardinal Travels
In our household state of constant chaos and poverty, we don't often get to do all the "fun" things that others get to do. We try to get out of the house as much as we can and expose the kids to the often overlooked and underappreciated things that are within a few hours drive of our house. With Connor and Jason's love of history and in rememberance of those who have served our country and sacrificed for our freedoms, we decided that yesterday would be the perfect day to travel to Springfield, Illinois to learn a little about President Lincoln and the Civil War.
Our first stop was the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum... well, at lease the museum part. I have to say - WOW! What a great exhibit! Caroline's attention span lasted all of about 15 minutes and then it was meltdown time. Unfortunately I had to keep the stroller moving or she was screaming, so I wasn't able to take the time to read everything and take it all in. Connor and Jason enjoyed it, especially the exhibit on the weapons and medicine of the Civil War and the Ghosts of the Library in 3D. I highly recommend, if you have not been there yet, a trip to check this out.
Next we headed to the Old Capitol for a quick walk through and then down to the Lincoln Home. Two seconds in to our tour, Caroline melted down again, so Jason had to make an early exit with her and missed it. Jason and I were totally stoked to grab lunch at a place we heard about on Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network. This place, D'Arcy's Pint, is known for their Horseshoe and if you don't know already, Springfield is the birthplace of this culinary delight. Nothing like toast topped with meat, fries and gobs of processed cheese food. YUM! We drove all the way across town just to find out that D'Arcy's is closed on Sunday. We headed on down the road a bit and came across another pub that just so happened to serve the famouse horseshoe, so we were very happy to get our fix! Connor even put a plate down himself!
Our final stop was a Lincoln Tomb. Caroline fell asleep as soon as we left the restaurant so I waited in the car with her while the boys explored. We opted to take the big camera and I am so glad that we did because we took a whopping 2 pictures with it!

Maybe this time?
I've tried to do this blog thing several times, each time quick out of the gate but never arriving at the finish line. I make no promises other than I am really going to try and post at least once a week. Our household is constantly on the go and as Caroline gets older, I'm feeling a bit sad that I have missed out on documenting her milestones. So, forever more (or until I slack off) this shall be the place to catch up on all things Cardinal.
